More VFW Post # 9097 Activities - July 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 7,2007
Mountaineer Post # 9097 hosted a cookout for residents of the Veteran's Home in Barboursville on Monday, July 23rd. Hotdogs with all the trimmings were served with potato salad, chips, soft drinks, watermelon, etc. The hotdog fixings were prepared at the post by Shirley Lewis and Brenda Adkins. Also bringing food were: Bill Lambert, Fran Smithson, Rene Vance, Sandy Gray, and Cheryl Norris.
Helping out at the event were Don and Becky Kinnard, Bill Lambert, Jim Totten, Doug Hall, and Ed Jividen. After the cookout, Don, Becky and Doug helped with Bingo for the veterans. The Women's Auxiliary donated $115 and the Post donated $125 towards Bingo. There were also two large boxes of books donated to the home by Post members.
On July 27th and 28th a Leadership, Membership and Awards training session was held in Flatwoods, WV. Those attending from Post 9097 were: Commander Bill Lambert, Senior Vice Commander Raymond Lewis, Jr. Vice Commander Ed Jividen, and Adjutant Roger Madden. Also attending the training session for the Women's Auxiliary were Shirley Lewis and Barbara Jividen. A large number of items with a value of $315 were donated to the Veterans Home at Barboursville and the Veterans Hospital in Huntington by other women's auxiliary groups. The items were to be distributed to the home and hospital by Don Kinnard.
A new Post committee, chaired by Ed Jividen, has been busy coming up with a list of things that the Post can do to further increase the excitement at the Post. Included in the suggestions by committee members were:
1. Marching in the Putnam County parade.
2. Marching in the Poca Heritage Day parade.
3. Sending out a newsletter to post members living in WV every quarter.
4. Having cookouts at the post (and come up with a reason to have cookouts - celebrate something)
5. Poker Runs
6. Forming a motorcycle riding group sponsored by the Post.
7. Having a bike show at the Post (Maybe asking Gary Lewis' employer to help sponsor).
8. Adopt a military unit that is overseas.
9. Having a 4-wheeler raffle (Gary Lewis has info and Glenn is checking to see if it is workable).
10. Better use of the post (changing the marquee, using the kitchen for dinners, etc.)
11. Having a breakfast for the community at the Post once a month.
12. Elimination drawings (Glenn will explain).
Any member with other ideas for events should please contact Ed Jividen.
