Natalie Watson to vie for title - Poppy Queen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  -  October 1,  2007

THE VFW Post # 9097 Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring Natalie Watson for West Virginia Buddy Poppy Queen.   Natalie is the daughter of Brian and Angie Watson of Hurricane, WV.  She is the grand daughter of Auxiliary member Nancy Miller.  The 6year old is a first grader at Conner Street Elementary School in Hurricane.  Natalie will represent Post #9097 in the competition.  Anyone can vote.  Each vote is only ONE PENNY.  All donations will be appreciated.

Soon, there will be donation jars located all around Teays Valley.  We would certainly like to see Natalie win and represent Mountaineer Post #9097. If you would like to set up a penny collection point, please contact either Nancy Miller at 562-2180 or Shirley Lewis, 562-3202.  The winner will be announced in June 2008 at the VFW State Convention.

The Buddy Poppy movement was inspired by Canadian Army Col. John McCrae's poem, "In Flanders Fields."  Poppies were originally distributed by the Franco-American Children's League to benefit childre4n in devastated areas of France and Belgium following WW I.  In 1924, the VFW registered the name "Buddy Poppy" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and 31 years later, the "Buddy Poppy" became a national program of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Donations may be made to: VFW 9097 Ladies Auxiliary, PO Box 303, Hurricane, WV  25526.
